Nitrous Oxide (N2O) is a naturally occurring gas, emitted by bacteria in soils and oceans, and is a major greenhouse gas. Although its radiative warming effect is substantially less than CO2, its persistence in the atmosphere magnifies its impact on global warming by 310 times compared to CO2.
The main source of man-made N2O is agriculture in the form of nitrogen fertilizers, cultivating soil and handling animal waste.
N2O accounts for 8% of global man-made GHG emissions |
